Situated in the North-West part of India, the Kashmir valley is surrounded by the Himalayas, and historically had access to the renowned silk routes. Its long winters encouraged the use of many hand skills, among which was the rearing of goats for Pashmina, a refined luxurious fibre. Such Pashmina created the famed Kashmiri shawls, with complex weaving techniques and a sophisticated aesthetic which continues to find resonance around the world through historical masterpieces in collections. Their repertory of curling vines and flowering shrubs was expressed in a specific woven technique called kanni. Embroidered versions required the block printing of designs onto fabric, creating a tradition of printed designs in the valley as well.
